Prime Minister Boyko Borisov Inspected the Сommencement of Сonstruction works for modernisation of a 17-km section of first-class I-8 road Dragoman - Slivnitsa
Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the Chairman of the Management Board of Road Infrastructure Agency Georgi Terziyski inspected the commencement of construction works for modernisation of a 17-km section of first-class I-8 road Dragoman - Slivnitsa. A second roadway will be built in the section and the old one will be reconstructed, thus giving the section the characteristics of a motorway. It is part of the Europe Motorway which will connect Sofia with Kalotina Border Checkpoint.
The amount of the investment is BGN 117.3 million and it is provided by the state budget. The deadline for completion of construction works is 2021, but Prime Minister Borisov wants the contractors to complete the section by the end of 2020. “Next year - for New Year’s Eve - people will be able to go to Belgrade by a motorway. Leaving from Bourgas for Belgrade, Munich, there should not be a traffic light”, Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Borisov pointed out that funds for expansion of Kalotina Border Checkpoint have been allocated because of the inflow of investments in the country. He underlined that heavy goods traffic through the border checkpoint is expected to increase and this necessitates its expansion.
The route of Europe Motorway between Kalotina Border Checkpoint and Sofia ring road is 48 km long and is divided into three parts. The construction of the first two sections includes the modernisation of the existing first-class I-8 road between Kalotina and Slivnitsa. The first section from Kalotina Border Checkpoint to Dragoman is 14.5 km long and will be financed by the Connecting Europe Facility and the national budget. At the end of 2018, a contract was concluded with the contractor of the technical design for construction of the site and the signing of a contract for construction supervision is forthcoming. The construction works on the middle section of the route between Dragoman and Slivnitsa commence now. The third section from Slivnitsa to the junction with the Northern Speed Tangent is 16 km long and will include a new route. The technical design for the section is currently under preparation.
