Road Infrastructure Agency Opens Pubic Procurement Procedures for Design and Construction of Struma Motorway, the Carriageway to Sofia through the Kresna Gorge

AM_Struma_lot_4_lenta_2.JPGThe Road Infrastructure Agency opens public procurement procedures for selection of Contractor for design and construction of the carriageway to Sofia of Struma Motorway, in the Kresna – Krupnik section. This is the carriageway from Kulata to Sofia and will pass on the eastern side of the Kresna Gorge on a new alignment. The section is 23.6 km long. A total of 7 tunnels, 21 viaducts, 4 road junctions and 12 underpasses and overpasses will be built.



The indicative value of the procurements amounts to 875.3 million BGN, VAT excluded. The project is co-funded by the EU Cohesion Fund and the national budget under Operational Programme Transport and Transport Infrastructure 2014 – 2020.

Two public procurements are launched since the section is divided in two lots, thus allowing for the simultaneous work on the site in order for the project to be completed within the time framework of the operational programme – until 2023.

Lot 3.2.1with a length of 13.2 km includes the section on the left carriageway of the motorway, from km 375+860 to km 389+100, and the adjacent road links. The road gauge is 10.50 m, having two traffic lanes, each of 3.5 m wide, guide strips of 0.25 m each and two road shoulders of 1.5 m width. A third lane for trucks is foreseen at longitudinal slopes of 4%. The following three road junctions will provide for the access to the alignment:

  • Poleto road junction at km 379+470 which will provide access from Kulata to the villages of Brezhani and Poleto, as well as switching in the motorway to Sofia.
  • Mechkul road junction at km 384+230 which will provide for the access from Kulata to the villages of Mechkul and Brezhani and switching in the motorway to Sofia.
  • Stara Kresna road junction at km 387+620 which will provide for the access from Kulata to the villages of Stara Kresna and Oshtava and switching in the motorway to Sofia.

Three tunnels will be built in this section – Simitli (211 m long), Rakitna (1135 m long) and Stara Kresna (1052 m). They will feature fire-alarm installations, ventilation, electric power supply, lightning, traffic management, etc. Ten viaducts with a total length of 3.5 km and 3 underpasses and overpasses will be constructed.

The indicative value of Lot 3.2.1 is BGN 444 796 305, VAT excluded.

Lot 3.2.2 with a length of 10.4 km is a section on the left carriageway of the motorway, from km 389+100 to km 399+500. This Lot includes the bypass of Kresna which is 5.5 km long (from km 396+137 to km 401+691). The road gauge is 10.50 m, having two 3.5 m wide traffic lanes and two guide strips, each 0.25 m wide, and two 1.5 m wide road shoulders. A third lane for trucks is provided at longitudinal slopes of 4%. At the Kresna bypass, there will be a rest area built for short stops, which will be electrified and will have water and sewage system. The rest area will be linked to the town of Kresna.

The section will have 4 tunnels – Tisata (171 m long), Sveta Nedelya (1.3 km), Kresna 1 (358 m long), and Kresna 2 (230 m long). They will have fire-alarm installations and systems, ventilation, electric power supply, lighting, traffic management, etc. The section will include 11 viaducts with an approximate overall length of 5 km as well as 9 underpasses and overpasses. Kresna road junction at km 401+640 will provide for access from Kulata to Sofia, Road I-1.

The indicative value of the public procurement for Lot 3.2.2 is 430 525 209 BGN, VAT excluded.

Traffic of both Lots will be controlled by Intelligent Transport Systems and monitoring systems – road traffic stations, video surveillance, meteorological monitoring, etc.

The deadline for implementation of each public procurement is 1556 days, including the duration for design and construction.

All candidates for the design and construction of Lot 3.2.1 may submit their offers until 17:30 on 8 November 2018, while for Lot 3.2.2 the deadline is 17:30 on 15 November 2018.
